The Manx is an old natural breed originating from the Isle of Man,
an
independent island situated in the Irish Sea in between Ireland
and Britain.
After many centuries of breeding in Man, Manx cats occur that
partly or completely lacking the tail. This is the result of a
semi-dominant mutation that must have occurred in the far away
past.
As a tail is not essential to be able to survive as a farm cat or
house cat and Manx cats do jump, climb, run and hunt as well as
other cats, this unique trait survived. Also in many other parts
of the world comparable cats occur, like in Scandinavia and
Karelia (also a dominant trait) and the Far East (a recessive
trait) and also one of the wild cat species, the Lynx is short
tailed.
Manx cats are sturdy built compact medium sized cats with a
pleasing
friendly round face. They are well muscled and balanced and have
strong longer hind legs enabling them to jump and run extremely
well. In type they are very close to the original farm cat (from
which also the European Shorthair is derived) except for their
lack of tail. The occur in both shorthair and longhair versions,
both inside and outside the Isle of Man. The longhaired variety is
called Cymric in some associations and simply Longhaired Manx in
others.
The temperament of a Manx is intelligent, affectionate and dog
like. They are very attached to their owners and enjoy in
participating in everything that happens in the household. They
love playing games until high age and are very social towards
humans, other cats and dogs. They are however not demanding and
are very soft natured and sensitive. People who once have been
owned by the special magic of a Manx often want another one around
once their animal has died.
As Manx have been treated well and cherished for centuries in
their native country, they have a very soft natured and
affectionate temper and are very social and tolerant companion
animals to have around. Also in the Isle of Man until today many
Manx cats can be found, living as cherished pets with the local
people.
