I adopted “Smokey” on Friday 7 Oct 2005 and have had him for 5 days now and already I can see his personality shine through.

His previous owners were moving and couldn’t keep him anymore (which I thought was very unfair). He was advertised in the paper and I went to have a look at him. I originally wanted to get a kitten but after seeing Smokey (being a cat lover) I just fell in love with him.

I stay in a granny flat and was worried that he wouldn’t adapt to new surroundings as well as a new area but in the last few days he’s fitted in perfectly and showing a bigger part of himself as the days move on.

I don’t think that his previous owners were big cat lovers as they also had two dogs who, used to eat the cat food and chase him around the house, that they had to keep him in a bedroom. They weren’t upset when I came to collect him either and with him staying by me now and me spending much needed time with him, I can see what a beautiful cat he really is.

He’s already 2 years old and quite a bit overweight (currently on a diet). At night I spend the whole evening stoking him and giving him the love he probably never had and his personality is blossoming. He loves it when you scratch his head and when you stop he comes and bumps your hand with his head, as if to say “carry on” or he will start pawing on your hand or even face. He’s shown traits of ‘childlikeness’ in following me everywhere around my place and running to my feet for protection when danger lurks. I feel truly loved and the bond between us is growing, even though I’ve only had him for a few days.

I understand when they say that a true cat lover will look upon a cat as a child in the home and will generally refer to them as “my baby” or “my child”…as I find myself doing that quite a lot.
