A STORY TO WARM YOUR HEART - “PIET & HIS BELOVED MICHELLE”
Piet is an elderly man who worked for a nursery that had to close down. His
manager kindly found him a place to stay as well as donating Piet most of the
plants that were not sold and the two Wendy houses in which Piet and his sister
are living. I met Piet about a year ago when trapping ferals in Valhalla.
Warm Regards,

With
a song in my heart I would like to report that another 4 of the
Paul Kruger Street cats were trapped by Feral Squad and
sterilised by Silverton SPCA. The cats are in great shape and so
healthy that you won't believe its the same colony of sick,
nutritious and starving cats from a few months ago. This is
because of the medical attention and nutritious food that they
have been receiving since the first plea for this colony went
out.

Warm away your cat’s winter woes this June – national Hill’s Pet Mobility
Month
Arthritis is a common condition in cats although few show
obvious symptoms. Feline osteoarthritis has been shown to affect
about two-thirds of cats aged 12 years and older, and as many as
25% of all cats.

National Cat Action Taskforce
Dear animal lover,
Today, we have a very exciting announcement to make: the birth
of the first national cat-care NGO in South Africa: the National
Cat Action Taskforce (NCat)!
This is an organisation with a difference, however. Not only
will it be national, but it will have the following two
objectives:
Primary objective: To help existing cat-care organisations
and individuals countrywide do more of what they are already
doing.
In other words, we want to help those organisations rescue
more cats, feed more cats, sterilise more cats, and home
more cats. We would like to do this by providing them not
only with funds – which will be distributed carefully and
systematically – but also by helping them gain access to
resources such as information, veterinary services, traps,
etc.
Secondary objective: To train and employ – and therefore
empower – previously disadvantaged individuals, eg as feral
trappers.

TUFCAT Shelter Day Update
Dear Everyone,
Thank you so much for giving up your Saturday and venturing all
the way out to UWC to assist us with repairing and waterproofing
the cat shelters. I cannot tell you what a difference this will
make in terms of improving the cats’ quality of life and how
much it facilitates our job of caring for them.
I felt so utterly despondent (as you saw from my previous email)
because I thought no one was coming, but was so incredibly
surprised by the number of generous, compassionate and socially
responsible individuals who made this day the success that it
was. Jenny gave up a birthday celebration to attend, for which I
am eternally grateful as you and Magda knew exactly what to do
and I can honestly say things would not have proceeded as
smoothly as they did without the two of you!

Easter Eggs Can Poison Your Pet
For many people Easter means indulging in chocolates and sweets,
but before treating the four legged members of the family, be
warned - chocolate can kill your pet. “Chocolate contains
theobromine, a stimulant that is toxic to animals,” says Dr Guy
Fyvie, veterinary advisor for Hill’s Pet Nutrition. “Humans
metabolise theobromine easily, but dogs process it much more
slowly so it can build up to toxic levels in their system quite
quickly.”

SPCA EMBARKS ON CAT AWARENESS MONTH PROJECT
- March 2010
The Tshwane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) will be promoting March 2010 as Cat Awareness Month. As it was established during a recent survey that compared to dogs, not many cats are reclaimed by their owners from the SPCA. The whole purpose of the project will be to create awareness amongst the public of lost cats taken in by the SPCA, to promote cat adoptions and to educate the public on responsible pet ownership towards cats as domestic animals.
Please contact your nearest SPCA branch for more details on bookings of sterilisations, vaccinations or microchip implants. The information will also be available on the Tshwane SPCA web site, go to
www.spcapta.co.za
