Letters: Tracey Pace – To all pet owners emigrating

| December 30, 2011

To all pet owners emigrating,

I am so tired of all the pleading emails and advertisements for the people staying in South Africa to adopt your pets. I am so tired of hearing how you love them so much and it’s tearing you apart to leave them behind but you cannot bear for them to be in quarantine for 6 months. Why don’t you just admit that you actually don’t want to pay for them to go with you, that you are too just too mean and you are taking the easy way out? Why don’t you admit that something more important than them has come up and they are completely dispensable because you will just replace them with “another little darling” when you are all settled in your new country and will not spare them a second thought.

You are advertising for any stranger to come along and take your “little darling” off your hands because it’s best for them but you just want to see the back of these animals who have given you unconditional love from day one so that your conscience is clear. Animals do emigrate with their loving owners and stay in quarantine for 6 months and are completely fine and live a happy life with their families in their new countries but these seem to few and far between with the number of advertisements around. I have friends who have taken their dogs to New Zealand and other friends who have taken their cats to Australia with no problems and they coped perfectly well and have moved on and are happy at home now.

There are so many abandoned animals in this country without you contributing to the problem. I run a cattery and people leave their cats with me for 3 to 6 months. Cats and dogs do not have a sense of time and accept the situation very well, I don’t see why they would not cope with quarantine in the UK, New Zealand or Australia which is very well run and the facilities are fantastic. Look what happened to all the animals left in Zimbabwe when everyone made a run for it. Shame on you for leaving these poor creatures behind without a second thought and making your problem someone else’s problem.

Regards
Tracey Pace
