The American Shorthair Cat

American Shorthairs are a breed of cat that has its origins in the USA. They are thought to have originated from cats brought over on the Mayflower and other ships as mousers. While today’s ASH should still be able to hunt, most are far too busy being lap cats to be bothered by such mundane tasks as mousing.

The cats are known for their good health, quiet disposition and amiability with children and dogs. They are low maintenance cats which are not only lovely to look at but easy going and affectionate. American Shorthairs are very social cats and enjoy people, but they do not require constant attention. They are very adept at entertaining themselves and enjoy toys. American Shorthairs typically want to have at least their back feet on a solid surface so are not all that fond of being held unless you support the hindquarters with your hand, but they love to curl up in your lap or snuggle with another cat. They prefer to get around on their own steam and are what is called “four-on-the-floor cats”. The breed is also very adaptable and they travel well and seem to thrive on visiting new interesting places.

As long as it is kept indoors an ASH will live, on average, 15-20 years with only annual veterinary checkups as they are a very healthy breed without many of the health related conditions and flaws that some other breeds have.
